The History of Chiropractic Care

If you’ve never been to a chiropractor, the whole idea that your spine is the key to good health might sound like some kind of new age alternative treatment.

In reality, the value of chiropractic care was established in 1895 by Daniel David (D. D.) Palmer. D. D. started a small school to train others in his technique of adjusting subluxations in the spine to treat a variety of health conditions. D. D.’s son and student,  Bartlet Joshua (B. J.) Palmer, expanded the school to the current Palmer College of Chiropractic and committed his life to promoting mainstream acceptance of chiropractic care.

Still chiropractic care was not taken seriously by the medical profession until research began in the 1970s to document its effectiveness in patient care. Over the next few decades this research and scholarly interest helped establish clinical guidelines for treatment of a variety of health conditions, resulting in greater acceptance by medical physicians and insurance.

As more and more patients are getting not only relief of their pain but enjoying better overall health through chiropractic care, it is no longer considered “alternative” medicine.
